Hi, Friend!

As we move through the second half of the legislative session, we are getting ready to take action on several bills that have upcoming hearings. Read below to see what is coming up and what you can do now to take action to support Hoosier children.

Enjoy your weekend,

Sarah

Direct file to adult court

HB 1256- "Juvenile Court Jurisdiction" is scheduled to be heard in the Senate Committee on Corrections and Criminal Law on Tuesday, March 16th at 10AM

If passed, it will change current law to expand direct file to include gun possession offenses. Though we want to keep guns out of the hands of all children, including this offense would re-establish the second leading driver of children into adult court, an overwhelming majority of whom are black male youth. We will be at the State House prepared to testify to amend this bill to remove gun offenses from the direct file statute.

Juvenile Justice- Act Now!

SB 368, "Juvenile Justice" is scheduled for a hearing in the House Committee on Courts and Criminal Code on March 24 at 8:30AM. If passed into law, this bill will ensure children aren't housed in adult jails, establish standards to make sure children are competent to stand trial, and create a system of automatic expungement for juvenile records.

Please contact key legislators now and ask them to support this bill when it is heard in committee. Click on the link below and contact those legislators in just a few clicks!

Civics education

HB 1384, Civics Education, passed unanimously out of the Senate Committee on Education and Career Development earlier this week. If passed, this bill will require Indiana middle schools to provide one semester of civics education. Supporters for this bill say that the earlier students learn about civics, the more likely they will be to later engage politically at a local level. One of our top goals at MCCOY is to get more young people engaged in advocacy efforts, so we are excited for the support it is getting at the State House!
