Hello, Friend!

The Indiana General Assembly kicked off it's 2021 legislative session on Monday.

Legislators have been filing and introducing bills all week, so I have spent my time combing through them all working to identify the ones that could impact children, their families, and those who serve them. The 2021 session is well under way and it is my hope that this weekly newsletter will keep you in the know and ready to speak out on any legislation that comes up and matters to you!

Have a particular bill in mind that you want me to pay attention to? Let me know!

IN legislative priorities

Senate Republicans and Democrats have released 2021 legislative priorities guided by effects Hoosiers have experienced as a result of COVID-19.

Senate Republicans are focusing on COVID-19 liability protection for businesses, virtual learning funding, telehealth, and local government accountability.

Senate Democrats are focusing on increasing the minimum wage, providing compensation to workers injured on the job, justice system reform, and voting law revisions.

Our current bills of interest

Legislators have been submitting new bills for this session all week, but today is the filing deadline for Senate, and Monday is the deadline for all House bills. This year, we have identified bills that will give added supports to students and teachers; reform and improve the justice system; protect youth struggling with hunger, housing, and homelessness; and ensure workers have access to benefits to enable them to care for their families.

MCCOY does not support all of these bills, but we found them all of interest to keep an eye on this session. Are we missing one you care about? Let me know!

2021 Advocacy training opportunity

We had a fantastic turn out to our 2021 Advocacy IN the State House Training so we've added another one! Join me at noon on January 21 to learn about what is happening at the State House and how YOU can get involved this year! We will cover:

  • The 2021 legislative timeline
  • Bills MCCOY is tracking that affect Hoosier children and their families
  • State House measures and precautions to keep you safe
  • How you can follow along, track bills, and connect with legislators

I hope you are having a happy New Year and I look forward to touching base with you regularly this legislative session!
