Governor Holcomb's Budget Proposal

On Wednesday, Governor Holcomb released his budget proposal for the next two years which calls for increased funding for K-12 and higher education as well as expanded broadband internet. Also included in the budget proposal is a funding bump to the Department of Child Services, though the agency will continue to operate with 5% less funding than in the previous budget cycle). Not currently included in the proposal, however: anything specifically related to teacher pay. 

Student ID information

Senate Bill 19, "Required Information on Student ID Cards," was heard in the Senate Committee on Family and Children Services on Monday and passed 7-2. This bill would require public schools that issue student IDs to students in grades 6-12 to include a suicide prevention hotline telephone number and a human trafficking hotline telephone number. 

A similar House Bill was introduced yesterday and referred to the House Committee on Education. This bill is House Bill 1565, "Suicide hotline information on student ID cards." The bill does not currently have a committee hearing date assigned. 

Pregnancy Accommodations

One of Governor Holcomb's top priorities for the 2021 legislative session is to provide workplace accommodations for pregnant workers. This year, MCCOY will be joining our friends at the Indiana Institute for Working Families and other pregnancy accommodation advocates to support House Bill 1358  and Senate Bill 246, both titled "Pregnancy and Childbirth Accommodation."  The aim of these bills is to ensure that pregnant workers receive needed accommodations, like more frequent water breaks to prevent dehydration or relief from heavy lifting, to stay healthy while continuing to work.
