Pregnancy Accommodations

Earlier this week, HB 1309, "Pregnancy Accommodation," passed the Senate Committee on Pensions and Labor (6-4).

MCCOY supports passing a comprehensive pregnancy accommodations bill to ensure all pregnant workers have protections and supports in place to ensure they have a healthy and safe pregnancy. Unfortunately, we cannot support HB 1309: all it does is state that women have a right to ask for support, not a right to the support itself. 

We need to follow the lead of 30 other states who have already done so and pass a simple requirement that employers must provide a reasonable accommodation for pregnant workers, unless doing so would impose an undue hardship. We hope to continue fighting for a proper accommodations bill at the State House next year. 

State Budget and school funding

With only about three weeks left in the 2021 legislative session, lawmakers are working hard to come to an agreement on the State Budget, HB 1001 which will provide funding to our state for the next two years.

A big concern for Indiana teachers is what kind of funding their schools will receive in the state budget: recent projections from the statehouse estimate that more than $140 million in new monies will go to private school programs over the next two years – more than one-third of all new education dollars allocated in the latest budget proposal. This would take much needed funding away from public schools who serve low-income students and need the dollars more. 

Many teachers took to the State House earlier this week to ask lawmakers to provide equitable funding to public schools when the Indiana State Budget comes to a vote.

U.S. Representatives are circulating a bipartisan letter to support an increase to CAPTA (Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act) and we need your help to ask your US House Representative to sign onto the letter today!

CAPTA is foundational to our child protection system and includes important community-based child abuse prevention grant programs for states that strengthen families and keep children and families safely together and out of foster care. Tell your U.S. representative to sign onto the letter circulated by Reps.
