Hello, Friend!

The Indiana General Assembly 2021 session starts on January 4, 2021.

Everyone is gearing up for what is about to be a very interesting Legislative Session. With a State Budget to be passed amongst all of the other bills expected to be filed and discussed, all in the midst of a global pandemic, things are going to be especially chaotic this year at the State House. I want to make sure that you stay up to date with everything happening at the State House.

Here's what you need to know before session begins:

Governor Holcomb's 2021 Next-Level Agenda

Thursday morning, Governor Holcomb released his 2021 Next-Level Agenda. In it, he includes his top priorities and goals for our state this upcoming year. Some of his priorities that we will be following include:

  • Workplace accommodations for pregnant workers
  • Expanded broadband internet access
  • Extended funding for K-12 schools for the remainder of the school year
  • Assessment of early learning expansion, accountability, transparency, and virtual learning
  • Improve services and  increase opportunities for Indiana's minority populations

Transparency and Public Participation at the State House

A global pandemic makes it very difficult for advocates to safely participate in the legislative process. This is why MCCOY signed on to a letter to Leadership in the Indiana General Assembly that requests expanded accessibility for public participation at the State House as well as transparency on when bills will be heard and amendments are filed. Included in the letter are requests for:

  • House and Senate committees to accept written, prerecorded, live video, and in-person testimony on legislative proposals
  • Proposed amendments should be filed and available to the public at least one full day, rather than just two hours, before they are eligible for a vote
  • Committee hearings should be scheduled 72 hours, instead of 24 hours, in advance.

2021 Advocacy Training Opportunity

Want to learn more about what is going on at the State House and how you can get involved? Join me for an hour long training on Thursday, January 7. We will cover:

  • The 2021 legislative timeline
  • Bills MCCOY will track that affect Hoosier children and their families
  • The State House in the time of COVID: State House measures and precautions to keep you safe
  • How you can follow along and track bills through IGA.IN.GOV
  • How you can best connect with your legislators

Stay tuned for more advocacy updates in the New Year!

For now, I wish you all a very happy and healthy holiday season!
